Upon finishing her first-ever game of rugby in high school, Caitlin Beaton decided one day she will play for Canada’s National Senior Women’s team. The 21-year-old prop and lock will get the chance she’s been waiting for when she suits up of the Ontario Storm in the National Women’s League competition this weekend in Quebec City. Born in Clavering, Ontario, Caitlin fell in love with rugby when the sport was first introduced to her secondary school during her third year. She quickly discovered she had a natural gift in the sport. The following summer, Caitlin made the move to club rugby. She joined the Fergus Highlanders RFC where she made a name for herself on the pitch. She decided that one day she earn a spot on Canada’s National team. But Caitlin knew in order to do that, she would have to stand out on every level of the sport possible. It didn’t take long for Caitlin to break into the provincial level, as she earned a spot on Ontario’s U17 squad and has been consistently representing Ontario ever since. There was still a long road ahead of her before she could even think of breaking to the national level, however. Caitlin’s accomplishments continued to snowball into post-secondary. When she arrived at the University of Guelph, she set out to shine in the CIS competition. She did just that. Caitlin was appointed Captain of the unstoppable Gyphons squad that dominated CIS Championships in 2011 and she earned an All-Star title that same year. “It is really amazing to finally accomplish a goal that you have been working towards for so long,” Beaton said. Caitlin could barely contain her excitement leading up to the NWL competition this weekend, as she knows another stand out performance could lead to the long-awaited transition from the provincial rugby to the coveted national level. “Excited, anxious and really honoured to be playing with and against so many talented individuals,” Beaton said. The Ontario Storm takes on British Columbia Thursday at 12 PM at Laval University. For more information on the 2012 National Women’s League, visit: www.nwlrugby.com |
